Medieval Istria and Glagolitic alphabet
Visit the northern parts of the Istrian inland and explore the towns Roč and Hum which were fortified castles once. Today, they are small towns with an easy-going everyday life. This region lies beneath the Ćićarija mountain chain and was never densely populated. Inhabited by the Slavic people from the 9th century the Slavic alphabet, Glagoljica, was widely used here from the middle ages until the 19th century. We will explore these inscriptions and get to know the traditions which are still kept.

Day 1
Feel the time standing still and the taste of mistletoe brandy
pinHum | Croatia
We will take you from the coastal region to the Ćićarija mountain chain which governs the Istrian peninsula towards the east. Our first stop will be in Roč, a town established in prehistoric time, with traces from the times when the Glagolitic alphabet was in use. You will witness a Glagolitic graffiti from around 1200 a.c. The churches St. Roch and St. Anthony are worth a visit. Following the road from Roč to Hum, we will admire the sculptures representing the history of the Glagolitic alphabet neatly placed in nature. Hum, according to the Guinness Book of Records, is the smallest town in the world. It is also the home of the Biska - a traditional Istrian brandy made on the herb "Mistletoe". It is used as a digestive and it is available in the small shops in Hum. We will end up in the local tavern tasting the famous Istrian soup "Manestra". From here we return to the starting point.
